Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment, Brandon! I agree--it is certainly a challenge to build genuine connections when it seems like everyone's angling to have their articles read. If it helps, the writers that I've built relationships with took the time to meaningfully respond to my articles as a way of starting a dialogue. It's not easy, but it is possible.
